Rt. Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu

Member Representing Enugu North and Enugu South Federal Constituency in the 10th National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Man The Constituency Calls The City Rep

Chimaobi Sam Atu was elected to the House of Representatives in 2023 on a plain undertaking: that representation would be measured by what arrived in the constituency, not by what was announced in Abuja. Three years on, the constituency has given him a name of its own. He is called the City Rep, and it is used as a statement of fact rather than a courtesy.

The constituency he represents is not rural hinterland. Enugu North and Enugu South hold the centre of Enugu city: Ogbete and Coal Camp, New Haven and Independence Layout, Achara Layout and Uwani, and the Awkunanaw communities of Ugwuaji, Obeagu, Amechi and Akwuke that run to the edge of the city. It is a constituency of traders, artisans, civil servants, students and farmers, with the oldest public schools in Enugu urban and some of the worst eroded roads in the South East.

His work has followed the shape of that constituency. Roads first, because without them the markets close early and the schools empty when it rains. Then the schools themselves, then the laboratories inside them, then the fees of the children who sit in them. Then the young people who have finished school and have nothing to do, trained in a trade and given the capital and the materials to start.

On the floor of the House he has concentrated on the things his constituency would feel: a Federal Medical Centre at Ugwuaji, erosion control for Enugu, the repeal of the moribund Nigerian Coal Corporation Act, a Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery, and the South East Development Commission, which has passed into law.

The Record Is The Manifesto

Three years of representation stand on this website: the bills, the roads, the classrooms, the laboratories, the scholarships and the training. Constituents are asked to judge the work that has already been done.
